Thursday, February 5: The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
Niffenegger’s bittersweet, romantic story is the tale of a man with “Chrono Displacement
Disorder” and the woman who loves him. Henry De Tamble is an
unwilling time traveler who is taken from one moment of his life to another
without warning. His wife Clare must learn to persevere through the separations
wrought by his journeys.
Thursday, March 5: Doomsday Book by Connie Willis
In the time-traveling near future, historians are able to journey to the past “incognito” to study ancient civilizations in person. A brilliant young scholar is
granted permission to visit England in the plague- and war-ridden 14th Century,
only to become stranded in a village confronting the Black Death. Willis’ sci-fi/historical
novel won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards, science fiction’s highest honors.
Thursday, April 2: Kindred by Octavia Butler
A 20th-century African-American woman finds herself whisked from
her San Francisco home to a plantation in the Antebellum South, where she
must save the life of her white slave-holding ancestor. Butler’s classic
science fiction work is a haunting exploration of race, family, and the dark
truths of the American past.
Thursday, May 7: The Plot to Save Socrates by Paul Levinson
What if you could change history by traveling back in time to save the life of
one man? What if that man did not want to be saved? In this inventive
blend of sci-fi, history, and philosophy, a graduate student returns to ancient
Athens to prevent Socrates from drinking the cup of hemlock. Along the way,
she meets many famous figures from Greek antiquity.
