Lyme Disease – The Controversy Behind the Illness
Manchester, NH – In April, UNH Manchester will host two programs that will explore the controversy behind Lyme disease. Lyme disease, a tick-born bacterial infection, is widespread across the US and causes a variety of symptoms including fever, headache, fatigue, and sometimes a characteristic bulls eye rash. The public is invited to learn more about this illness and why conflicting treatment protocols and patient reports of debilitating and difficult-to-treat symptoms have raised concerns about the medical community’s response.
The film, “Under Our Skin,” and a lecture presented by Lyme Activist and educator, David Hunter, are free and open to the public. Both programs will be held in the third floor auditorium at University Center located at 400 Commercial Street in Manchester. Pay and display parking is available in the Arms Park Parking Lot and on Commercial Street.
UNH Manchester, UNH’s urban campus in Manchester’s historic millyard, hosts a variety of public programs including lectures, films, book groups, exhibits and more. For special accommodations, please contact the Marketing and Community Relations Office at 603-641-4167 at least three weeks in advance of the event. Debunking the Myths Surrounding Lyme Disease
A great deal of myth and misunderstanding surrounds Lyme disease, both within and
outside the medical community. According to Mr. David Hunter, a long-time Lyme
disease advocate, many people are misdiagnosed with other chronic ailments such
as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Lupus and Multiple Sclerosis because
of the lack of understanding regarding the far-ranging nature of Lyme symptoms
and the inaccuracy of the testing. Learn more about the many aspects of Lyme
disease, from prevention to diagnosis to treatment protocols.
Presented by David Hunter, Lyme activist and educator.
Thursday, April 16 at 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Third floor auditorium
Film Screening: UNDER OUR SKIN (2008)
A dramatic tale of microbes, medicine and money, this eye-opening documentary
film investigates the untold story of Lyme disease, an emerging epidemic
larger than AIDS. Each year, thousands go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, told
that their symptoms are "all in their head." Following the stories
of patients and physicians as they battle for their lives and livelihoods,
the film brings into focus a haunting picture of our health care system and
its inability to cope with a silent terror under our skin. A frightening
expose about how the medical system is failing to address one of the most
serious epidemics of our times. David Hunter will facilitate questions and
answers following the film screening. The film is 109 minutes in length.
UNH Manchester, UNH's urban campus, offers liberal arts and applied majors in business, science, and technology, all with an urban focus. UNH Manchester is UNH. Learn more at www.unhm.unh.edu.
