Saving the Bees - Backyard Bee Keeping
Manchester, NH– Bees are responsible for pollinating plants that provide much of our food, which is why there are growing concerns about the health of the hives and honey bee colony collapse disorder. Join Wendy Booth, bee keeper and treasurer of the NH Bee Keepers Association, to learn more about the problems affecting bees, the fascinating life inside the hive, and the exciting hobby of keeping bees. The free lecture will be held at UNH Manchester on Wednesday, March 25 at 12:00 Noon.
Wendy has been keeping bees with her husband for 6 years. They run 10-14 bee colonies and own and operate a small honey business called Hive Healthy, www.hivehealthy.com. She is the treasurer and newsletter editor of the NH Beekeepers Association and she also writes the Pawtuckaway Beekeepers newsletter. Wendy also helps run an eight week bee school at the Pawtuckaway Beekeepers Association. She said, “I am very committed to educating the public as to the importance of the honey bee in our lives as well as hoping to encourage more people to take up keeping bees.” She was the 2008 Beekeeper of the Year and has had three of her bee photographs published in Bee Culture magazine, including the cover of the January 2009 edition and calendar. In 2008 she was interviewed by NHPR’s Laura Kinoy for a radio program about bees in NH.
The free lecture will be offered in the third floor auditorium at UNH Manchester, 400 Commercial Street. The session is offered as part of the college’s free Brown Bag Lecture Series which takes place on Wednesday’s at 12:00 Noon.
