UNH MANCHESTER 24th COMMENCEMENT CELEBRATES 325 GRADUATES
The University of New Hampshire at Manchester will celebrate the achievements of over 325 graduates at the college's 24th annual commencement proceedings on May 21. The proceedings will recognize more than 210 undergraduate and 115 graduate students who have earned their associates, bachelors, or masters degrees or an advanced graduate certificate at the university’s college in Manchester.
UNH President Mark Huddleston will lead the proceedings. The program includes remarks from Nick Durso, the 2009 student speaker, and a keynote address from Peter E. Ramsey, who will also receive the 2009 Granite State Award. The program also includes the presentation the college’s teaching excellence award to Susanne Paterson, Associate Professor of English, and the adjunct teaching award to Dana Biscotti Myskowski, adjunct faculty in Communication Arts. Commencement proceedings will be held in the Expo Center at The Center of New Hampshire in Manchester, N.H. beginning at 4:00 PM on Thursday, May 21. The program reflects the college’s commitment to undergraduate and graduate academic excellence, discovery, and community engagement.
Peter Ramsey has been called Manchester’s Song and Dance man by Manchester Mayor Bob Baines because of his lifelong love of the live theatre and music. In the last 20 years, he has produced over 350 live theatre productions. The once dark Palace Theatre has been reborn as the centerpiece of the region’s cultural and social experience because of his leadership, innate business sense, and creative solutions.
The Palace first opened in 1915 but by the 1970’s fire and flooding silenced the historic theatre. In 1999, the Trustees made a commitment to this landmark and named Ramsey as the President and Chief Executive Officer. The Palace Theatre now is a two and half million dollar operation that served over one hundred and twenty five thousand patrons last year and producing over 24 live theatre productions. The theatre is the home to many Manchester arts institutions including the NH Philharmonic, the Opera League of NH, the NH Theatre Awards, the annual Nutcracker and Christmas Carol productions. It has become the largest employer of theatre talent in New Hampshire.
Ramsey earned his B.A. at Keene State College, studied at UNH for a Masters of Public Administration, and earned a Doctor of Law from Franklin Pierce Law School. He has served as a member of the Keene State College Alumni Board of Trustees, Chair of the Manchester Arts Commission, and Co-Chair of the City of Manchester Intown Review Board. He has produced the highly acclaimed New Hampshire Theatre awards for the past seven years and co-founded the New Hampshire Professional Theatre Association. Peter is currently serving as a member of the House of Representatives in the NH legislature and on the committee for the Capital Budget. He also is the head coach for the men’s soccer team at Saint Anselm College of Manchester, N. H. Peter, a lifelong resident of New Hampshire, lives with his family in Manchester.
Nick Durso didn’t take the traditional high school-to-college route. Not long after graduation from Concord High School, Nick faced a series of family tragedies and a painful injury that ended a promising baseball career. Two colleges later, without a Plan B, and with motivation and self-esteem at a low point, Nick put college on the back burner. He tapped into the skills he learned on the baseball field and his natural aptitude in communication and mathematics. His perseverance, hard work, and commitment to excellence served him well. He found success and earned multiple awards in a challenging loan officer position at Sovereign Bank. In 2006, he returned to college majoring in Business with a Marketing concentration. His advisor recognized his maturity and work ethic noting that “Nick wants to get it right.” Nick has “gotten it right,” earning academic honors and professional awards, mentoring younger students, and giving a voice to alternative perspectives. After graduation, Nick will move to the South and prepare to pursue a law degree, a step he is well-prepared to take.
UNH Manchester, the university's urban, commuter college, brings the benefits of a university education to people who live and work in the greater Manchester area. The college’s liberal arts academic core is enhanced by programs in science, business and technology at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The majority of graduates are traditional college-age students, and many have attended classes while working full time and/or raising families. UNH Manchester students span a variety of backgrounds and goals, but share a commitment to academic achievement and play key roles in guiding New Hampshire’s future.
Many of the 2009 graduates have enhanced their academic programs through internships, research and community service and many are already positioned for careers after commencement for example:
- Jason Mattia, politics and society major from Manchester, who worked on Manchester Mayor Guinta’s task force on homeless youth in Manchester.
- Patrick McGuigan, a history major from Goffstown, whose oral history internship at the Manchester Historic Association, of the Irish in Manchester will coincide with the 125th anniversary of the parish they founded, St. Joseph.
- Elizabeth Neilan, a history major from Merrimack, managed a fulltime course load and two jobs, one as the project assistant for the UNH ELL Co Op Grant. Liz successfully led the UNH Manchester Ensuring Warmth from the Millyard team to first place in the New Hampshire Social Entrepreneurial Student Leader challenge this month and won the oral presentation award in the 2009 Undergraduate Research Conference.
- Anna Gdanian, communication arts major from Milford, interned at the Nashua Adult Learning Center helping to plan and teach ESOL courses. Anna returned last week from a study abroad program in Uganda and Rwanda with Food for the Hungry. She inspired so many with her blog posts.
- Chris Lussier, a Sign Language Interpretation major and nontraditional student from Milford, worked full time, mentored 160 hours per semester, and strived to become a welcomed member of the Deaf community.
- Nicole Ponti, communication arts major from Merrimack, balanced a job with fulltime course load, yet found time to contribute as co-chair of the student activity fee council and student representative to the College’s Budget committee.
- Katherine Pickowicz, a business major from Gilmanton and an Army reserve soldier, served tours in Iraq and came back to finish her business degree.
- Carole Chumak, a business major from Concord, winner of the business programs’ Michael S, Brennan award for Character, Perseverance, and Academic excellence, raised a family of 4 children alone in Concord while her husband stood multiple tours of duty with Special Forces in the mountains of Afghanistan. Carole is now in the executive training program at Target, and will soon be managing her own store, a scant 5 months after starting the program.
- Jesse Godek, a business major from Pelham, who has been dubbed the “Miracle Intern” in his PR agency internship host.
- Seniors in the business program’s senior seminar logged in more than 3000 hours at area non profits such as the International Institute, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Easter Seals.
