UNH Manchester — Promotions and Tenure
Manchester, NH – Kristin Woolever, dean of UNH Manchester, announced the promotion of two faculty members, Tom Birch of Exeter was promoted to full professor and Mihaela Sabin of Madbury was promoted to associate professor with tenure. The University System of New Hampshire Board of Trustees approved these promotions at their June meeting.
Tenure is awarded to faculty members who have displayed excellent performance and promise of long-range contributions to the educational purposes of the university. The promotion and tenure process includes a comprehensive review of each faculty member's activity in the areas of teaching, scholarship, service, and programmatic needs.
Dr. Tom Birch has been teaching economics in the social science division at UNH Manchester since 1987. Birch grew up in the Midwest and majored in economics as an undergraduate student at a small liberal arts college in Ohio. He completed his graduate work at Indiana University where he received a Ph.D. in economics. His dissertation emphasized the importance of evaluating government investment projects in terms of their influence on business investment decisions and resulting tax revenue. Birch is widely published, including his most recent book, F. Scott Fitzgerald: Under the Influence (Paragon House, 2006).
Dr. Mihaela Sabin joined UNH Manchester in the fall of 2007 and now serves as associate professor and coordinator of the computer information systems program. Originally from Romania where she completed a master's degree in computer science, Sabin also has a master's degree in college teaching and a Ph.D. in computer science from UNH. Central to her philosophy of teaching is partnering with her students in the always exciting endeavor of learning about computing and its applications. Her students learn to work in teams and communicate project results with clarity and precision to both fellow professionals and the larger community. Sabin has been published in numerous journal and conference papers.
