The Germans — Their First 2,000 Years

Manchester, NH – It was in 9 A.D., when Jesus was a young carpenter’s apprentice, that the battle of Teutoburg Forest took place, a moment in time that would shape the geography, history, and culture of an entire continent for the next twenty centuries until our own day. This year,  2009, marks the 2,000th anniversary of Germany.

Andrew Stangel, cultural historian and adjunct professor of art history at UNH Manchester, will teach a unique course this fall to celebrate the bimillennium of German history. The course, “The Germans – Their First 2,000 Years” (HIST 595), will survey the German historical experience from antiquity through the Middle Ages and Renaissance to the present day. Each class will be richly illustrated with materials photographed in museums and galleries and at historical sites throughout Germany and Europe. The course will be offered on Friday’s from 1:00 – 4:15, September 4 – December 18. Please call the registration office at UNH Manchester for more information, 603-641-4136.

A recipient of numerous academic honors and distinguished teaching awards, Professor Stangel has lectured at colleges, universities, and art museums and galleries in the United States and Europe. Stangel created and directed the art history tours program for the United States Armed Forces in Europe. While living abroad, Stangel photographed the collections of every major art museum and gallery in Europe, public and private, as well as at historical sites and archaeological zones throughout Europe and the Near East. He has also photographed the great collections on exhibition in the United States, and has a comprehensive resource collection of more than 100,000 art-historical slides, which he uses to illustrate his lectures.
