Teacher and Student Take On the International Criminal Court
Manchester, NH – Michael Contarino (Nottingham), associate professor and coordinator of the politics and society program, and Selena Lucent (Manchester), a senior in the politics and society program, recently had an article accepted for publication this fall in the journal, Global Responsibility to Protect.
The article, "Stopping the Killing: The International Criminal Court and Juridical Determination of the Responsibility to Protect," observes that existing international machinery to protect people from genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity is not working well, even though the United Nations General Assembly agreed in 2005 that the international community has a "Responsibility to Protect" people from such crimes.
The paper argues that the international machinery to protect people could be strengthened through some specific revisions of the statute of the International Criminal Court.
Global Responsibility to Protect is the premier journal for the study and practice of the responsibility to protect (R2P). The journal seeks to publish the best and latest research on the R2P principle, its development as a new norm in global politics, its operationalization through the work of governments, international and regional organizations and NGOs, and finally, its relationship and applicability to past and present cases of genocide and mass atrocities including the global response to those cases.
