UNH Manchester Announces AmeriCorps Opportunities for Students
Manchester, NH –UNH Manchester is recruiting 5 students to serve as AmeriCorps members during the 2009-2010 year. If making a difference in your community (on or off-campus) and in your life is important, and you are a student at UNH Manchester, consider the opportunities available through AmeriCorps. These positions, called AmeriCorps Education Awards members, earn an education stipend for participating over a 12-month period which can be applied directly to tuition bills or to loan repayments. Members completing 450 hours earn $1,250 and members completing 675-hours earn $1,800.
UNH Manchester’s Education Awards members, will have an opportunity to learn new skills and apply them as they work with students, faculty, administrators, and community partners to expand existing programs. We are recruiting students for:
- Two positions supporting CoLead’s Warmth from the Millyard Warm Clothing Drive (8/20/09 these two positions have been filled)
- One position supporting Student Clubs and Organizations – building on-campus community
- One position supporting UNH Manchester’s Veterans’ initiatives
- One position building volunteer and service opportunities linking students with the off-campus community

Opportunities and Job Descriptions
UNH Manchester AmeriCorps Education Award
Position: Community Service Student Assistant
Supervisor: Trece Mettauer, Coordinator of Community Outreach Scholarship, trece.mettauer@unh.edu
Responsibilities:
- Work with supervisor to create sustainable volunteer program at UNH Manchester
- Assist supervisor in teaching service learning course to be offered for credit in 2010
- Conduct focus groups of UNH Manchester students to collect information about issues impacting volunteerism, i.e., schedule, money, etc.
- Develop opportunities for partnership, around student needs, with 2 to 3 local nonprofits initially, with more to follow in second year
- Develop database to manage volunteers, volunteer positions, and capture important data
- Develop recruitment materials to identify volunteers
- Provide orientation and training for volunteers
- Serve as on-site volunteer coordinator at one of the partnering organizations for portion of weekly hours to provide assistance to partner organization and supervision for UNHM volunteers on-site
- Provide support for all volunteers on weekly basis
- Plan and execute 2 to 3 service events to promote community service at UNHM, i.e., blood drive
- Market community service through web site, Campus Connections, posters, etc.
- Connect with Admissions staff and FYE Coordinator to identify new students interested in community service, reaching out to these students when they arrive
- Plan and execute year end volunteer appreciation event to recognize service to the community
UNH Manchester AmeriCorps Education Award Positions: CoLead Program - Two positions available
Position Titles: Warmth from the Millyard Project Assistants
Hours: 450 over course of the 2009-2010 academic year; flexible schedule
Supervisor: Kate Hanson, Chairperson of Community Leadership Program and/or Dee Henley, CoLead Service Project Coordinator
Responsibilities:
- Assist students, staff and faculty with the organization of the WFMY project
- Act as liaison between CSL 201 class work and the overall WFMY structure
- Research new partners as both donors and recipients
- Assist with development of website and other social networking outreach efforts
- Connect with other service projects at UNH Manchester
- Identify other academic classes and/or departments with whom to partner
- Arrange meetings and focus groups as needed
- Work on WFMY advisory committee and assist with its organization and planning
UNH Manchester AmeriCorps Education Award
Position: Veteran Services Student Assistant
Position Reports to: Regina McCarthy, Director of Academic Student Services
Hours: 450 total hours over course of the 2009-2010 academic year.
Weekly schedule: flexible
Position Description
- Research best practices for post-secondary support of veterans.
- Identify college gaps in best practices
- Survey/interview student veterans at college for needs assessment aligned with best practices.
- Work with students to organize a club (SVA chapter)
- Facilitate an open forum once a month for student veterans
- Monthly review of web pages for live links, accurate information and to identify new VA program initiatives for links on website.
- Develop one appreciation event each semester
- Develop and moderate Bb organization
- Identify community partners support groups for families of vets
- Identify Support services in the community for vets and develop a services list.
- Work with college departments for programming and support services to meet academic and student support needs of veterans returning to the classroom such as Admission, Center for Academic Enrichment, Disabilities Services
- Liaise with UNH VA coordinator for visits to UNHM
- Organize a college-wide community service event to serve vet needs in our community.
UNH Manchester AmeriCorps Education Award
Position: Assiting the Student Activities Coordinator
Hours: 675 hours over course of the 2009-2010 academic year;
Location: Student Activities Center | Room 108 | University of New Hampshire at Manchester
Position Reports to: Jamie Saucier, Student Activities Coordinator
Time Commitment:
Most activity would occur in the morning/afternoon with some evenings. Hours can be matched to meet the needs of the student’s schedule. Schedule flexibility is allowed.
Job Purpose:
To increase organizations within the campus in order to build community in our urban campus and to create a sense of belonging for students at the college.
Job Description:
- Assist in planning and running the “Day in College” program with Parker Varney
- Assist in planning a music series for the community and college
- Assist in starting several new clubs on campus including a spring break challenge organization
- Develop a working model for a leadership program at the college
- Assist in Fundraising for Parker Varney’s Library
- Assist with the advising of the members of the Programming Board for Activities (PBA) and the Student Activities Fee Allocation Council (SAFAC)
Expectations:
- Gain an understanding and working knowledge of the areas of Student Activities
- Gain hands-on experience working with a program from beginning to end
- Appreciates community service and the role it plays in activities and universities
- Complete departmental project(s) that contributes to accomplish the departmental objectives
- Develop and implement project(s) that contributes to programs and services for the campus community
- Plan, publicize and execute your own program
- Work with a department or student group on a large event
