An Internship with the Museum of Science

Megan Nolan interns at the Museum of Science

Manchester, NH– This summer, Megan Nolan had the opportunity to learn about butterflies, space exploration, and the latest Harry Potter news. The experience was part of an exciting internship with the Media Relations Department at the Boston Museum of Science. A senior in the communication arts program, Megan understood the value of doing an internship so she sought out a position where she could explore her career aspirations. She was thrilled with the firsthand experience she got working with the media, writing press releases, maintaining social networking sites, and coordinating special projects.

Megan worked on several unique projects and exciting exhibits. She coordinated publicity for the Museum's Ask Buzz Program, a live NASA TV broadcast from the Newseum in Washington D.C. for the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11. She facilitated a Black Hole Burger Eating Contest which coincided with a special exhibit at the Museum, Black Holes: Space Warps & Time Twists. She also helped with the annual Eye Opener Program which allows 2nd grade students from Boston area schools to visit the museum for free every Tuesday. The program marked its 40th anniversary in 2009 and celebrated by having the students make a time capsule to be opened in 2048.

The communication arts program proved to be a great springboard for Megan. She said she applied much of what she's learned in class to her work as an intern and valued the learning opportunities she had through her MOS supervisors. She said, "The internship has been a great experience. I have been able to explore this career and get a grasp on what I want to do and need to learn." The museum also benefits from the fresh insight interns bring. Sarah Lynne Reul, Intern Program Coordinator for the Museum of Science, said, "The value of our interns is immense - we have over two hundred interns working at the museum each year, most staying one semester but some completing up to three."

The internship has affirmed for Megan that she would like to work in media relations or communications when she graduates from UNH Manchester in 2010. Until then, she'll continue working on her bachelor's degree, which includes a minor in English, and taking every opportunity she can to practice her craft so she's prepared with a competitive resume when she graduates.
