Manchester Public Library
Manchester, NH – The New Hampshire Art Association is pleased to present Dr. Andrew Stangel, Professor of Art History at UNH Manchester, in a series of lectures entitled “How to Look at and Understand the Old Art Masters.” These lectures will be held on Monday, October 19 at 6pm and on Thursday, November 12 at 6pm. The lectures will be held at the Manchester Public Library, located at 405 Pine Street in Manchester.
“How to Look at and Understand the Old Art Masters” will explore some of the major aspects of symbolism in the art of the Western world. Dr. Stangel will also discuss the essential themes of Western art from the end of the Middle Ages through the Renaissance to the present day. Artists such as Giotto, Michelangelo, and Raphael are among some of the great artists whose works have greatly enlarged our visual vocabulary.
Dr. Andrew Stangel graduated Phi Beta Kappa from UCLA and completed his graduate study in history and civilization at the Universities of Wisconsin and California. A recipient of numerous academic honors and distinguished teaching awards, he has lectured at colleges, universities, and art museums and galleries, in the United States and Europe. Dr. Stangel also created and directed the Art History Tours program for the United States Armed Forces in Europe. While living abroad, Stangel photographed the collections of every major art museum and gallery in Europe, public and private, as well as at historical sites and archaeological zones throughout Europe and the Near East. He has also photographed the great collections on exhibition in the United States, and has a comprehensive resource collection of more than 100,000 art-historical slides, which he uses to illustrate his lectures.
