What is an Internship?

An internship is any career-related work experience of limited duration in which an individual student takes on responsible roles outside of the traditional university environment: in a non-profit organization, a government office, or a for-profit business. Programs can be structured or unstructured, as long as there is training and supervision provided by the host site involved. Positions may or may not be paid, and the student may or may not receive academic credit. Students can do internships during the fall, spring or summer terms.

The Benefits of Hosting an Intern

Businesses, corporations and non-profit organizations can benefit from hosting UNH Manchester Interns.

  • Student interns complement the existing work force and support organizational objectives.
  • Interns can complete special projects or focus on specific areas that may not be possible with existing staffing.
  • Student interns bring their own perspective, skills and knowledge to the organization and the faculty advisors as well.
  • Supervising interns provides opportunities for organizational staff to develop leadership skills.
  • Organizations build a network of prospective employees who are screened and have the knowledge and training.
  • Organizations serve as good citizens and expand their good will in the community.
  • Organizations often are the focus of the college's public information initiatives spotlighting the benefits of the internship experiences for students and support for UNH Manchester.
