English For Speakers Of Other Languages At UNH Manchester
UNH Manchester offers several opportunities to English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students who wish to improve their English writing, reading, speaking, and listening comprehension skills.
Students seeking admission to a degree program at UNH Manchester should begin the process early, especially if academic transcripts need translation. You will also need to take the TOEFL test. Contact the UNH Manchester Admissions Office at 641-4150 for more information, advice or an application.

Courses for College Credit for ESOL students:
The following courses are designed for ESOL students. Students intending to register must complete an ESOL Assessment. For more information, contact the Center for Academic Enrichment at 603-641-4113.
English (ENGL) 400, English as a Second Language
Improves the competence of foreign students in listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. Recommended as preparation for ENG 401. 4 credits (may be repeated up to a total of 16 credits).
English (ENGL) 401A, Freshman English for ESOL Students
A special section of Freshman English for students whose native language is not English. Training to write more skillfully and to read with more appreciation and discernment, with special attention to the problems of non-native speakers of English. Supplemental work on listening and speaking as necessary. Frequent individual conferences for every student. 4 credits. Courses may be taken Pass/Fail, audit or for credit. Please Note: When auditing a course, students do not receive credit for the course toward a degree program.
The Center for Academic Enrichment
The Center for Academic Enrichment provides a free computerized assessment to determine students' English language proficiency level. Beginners will be referred to New Hampshire Community Technical College (NHCTC) or other local agencies such as the International Institute, Manchester Community Resource Center, Manchester Adult Education or the Latin American Center for ESOL courses at the appropriate level. For intermediate to advanced ESOL students, several options for continued language learning are available at UNH MANCHESTER.
Practice Software
Various computer software programs for language skills practice are housed at the Center for Academic Enrichment's ESOL lab. Programs include practice for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exam, pronunciation practice, and language model programs for listening and reading comprehension, as well as for building vocabulary.
Tutoring for UNH MANCHESTER Students
Center for Academic Enrichment tutors who have been trained according to the guidelines of the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) and certified by CRLA to work with ESOL students on writing, reading and other English language skills are available to work with UNH Manchester students at the Center for Academic Enrichment.
