Student Story - Nour Ali
Nour Ali was born in Baghdad, Iraq where she lived until she was 8 years old. She and her family moved to Kurdistan, a region in northern Iraq, and later moved to Turkey for 8 months and then to Syria where they lived for 3 1/2 years. Their journey brought them to Manchester, NH in 1999 where she entered the 7th grade and eventually graduated from Manchester's Memorial High.
Ali followed the path of her brother and sister and came to UNH to earn a degree. She chose to start at the Manchester campus because her sister had such a positive experience. Ali said, "My sister really liked the smaller classes and having the opportunity to talk one-on-one with professors." Ali is currently a junior and plans to transfer to Durham to complete her studies and earn a B.S. in microbiology.
Last year Ali was elected Vice President of the Student Government Association (SGA). When asked why she wanted to run for a seat in the SGA she said, "I'm more of a quiet person so I thought this would be a good experience to do something different." Ali and SGA President Nick Levasseur started their term in the fall of 2007. During their term in office she would like to see the development of more student clubs and organizations with a wide range of interests.
Ali joked about how much time she spends at UNH Manchester. She said, "Other than my home I pretty much live at UNH Manchester." In addition to being a full time student and SGA member, she tutors students in science and math and she also works as a clerical assistant in the Center for Academic Enrichment. After graduating Ali plans to pursue a master's degree program to become a physician assistant.
