Students working in the STEM Discovery Lab

The UNH STEM Discovery Lab enriches the learning experiences of students in grades K-12 to further encourage them to consider pursuing college. The programs offered at the STEM Discovery Lab help improve teaching and learning and close the academic achievement gap among science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students. 

Fall & Winter Youth Programs:

Design and Build Mobile Apps using MIT App Inventor!  In this program, you will learn how to design and program apps that can be used on a tablet or mobile device.  Both computer based and program design elements are introduced.  All levels of experience welcome!

Morning Session: Design and build a mousetrap power car and compete in the NH 4-H Makers Challenge in Spring 2018! Participants will use the Engineering Design and Science Practices to build a car that is powered by a mousetrap and attempt to achieve the farthest distance traveled. Youth in grades 6-8,

Afternoon Session: Learn about robotics, engineering, science, and mathematics while building an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) as part of a SeaPerch science and engineering technology camp! Explore engineering concepts, problem solving, teamwork, and technical applications.  Youth in grades 6-8.

How far can a car powered by a mousetrap travel? In this hands-on program, students learn about the engineering design process and build their own cars powered by mousetraps to find out! Best for youth in grades 5-8.

Summer Youth Programs:

Design Make Code will be offered this summer in collaboration with community partners. If you are an organization that serves youth and would like to find out more, please contact Emily Kerr.

PLAY TO INVENT

Focusing on collaborative project work, middle school students will engage in exciting hands-on engineering challenges. Students will learn how to build different structures, make and test wind turbines and gliders and create circuits using copper tape and Makey Makeys.

Run in partnership with the Manchester School District EL Summer Program.

This five-week summer program is offered to Manchester school district middle and high school students entering grades 6 – 12 in fall 2018. EXCELL in STEM combines pre-college English language and hands-on activities science, engineering, and computing.

Participants must be currently enrolled in or recently exited from English Language Learning support in their school.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Students conduct science experiments, solve computing and engineering challenges, and participate in STEM-focused field trips, all emphasizing inquiry, observation, analysis of data, and coding. STEM learning activities incorporate English Language tasks in academic reading and research, vocabulary building, writing, listening, and speaking.
